Individuals are getting tired of being subscribed medications that do more harm than good and seeing doctor after doctor without any relief. Because of this, neurofeedback therapy has become a popular therapy method for conditions ranging from anxiety and depression to concussions and migraines.
When first hearing about neurofeedback, you probably have a lot of questions. It’s a treatment that changes the state of my brain!? WHAT!?
No worries. We understand that neurofeedback therapy can be a big, scary word, and you might have some fears when it comes to trying it. That’s why we’ve put everything you need to know about neurofeedback in one place.
What is Neurofeedback Therapy?
Neurofeedback, or electroencephalography (EEG) in medical terms, is a non-invasive way to control and measure your brain waves and body temperature. This form of therapy allows your neurofeedback provider to retrain an otherwise involuntary body process – i.e. your brain waves – through conditioning.
Why is This Helpful?
Because common conditions like depression, ADHD, anxiety, concussions, and more occur when your brain waves aren’t working together in perfect balance. Neurofeedback therapy allows you to retrain specific areas of your brain to bring it back to its functional best.
You can compare this to your car after you’ve hit a pothole. Because its lost one of its tires, the rest are thrown out of alignment. Your car won’t work efficiently again until you have all the tires realigned.
Likewise, your brain won’t work efficiently until all of its regions are working in alignment. This is where neurofeedback comes into play.
How Does it Work?
When you begin treatment, you’ll map out the brain through Quantitative EEG (QEEG). This will help identify what specific areas of your brain are out of alignment. Once you have this important baseline information, your neurofeedback therapy can be tailored to the areas that need a little TLC.
During your session, sensors placed on targeted areas of your head will show the current state of your brain compared to what it should be doing. Sounds or music played through headphones will adapt to push your brain closer to a more comfortable state. That’s it! Pain-free, drug-free, and completely non-invasive. All you have to do is show up and relax.
Does Neurofeedback Work for Anxiety?
Absolutely! Research has shown that receiving neurofeedback therapy can help improve the way your brain functions to relieve symptoms of anxiety. Anxiety becomes an issue when your brain gets “locked” into a state of heightened sensitivity. It creates new neural pathways that cause anxious thoughts. The more we travel down those pathways, the harder it is to stop them. The result? Chronic anxiety.
Neurofeedback helps to retrain the region of your brain that is causing your symptoms bringing you back to a state of balance.
What Other Conditions Can It Help?
Neurofeedback therapy helps relieve the symptoms of a lot of conditions including:
Can Neurofeedback Be Harmful?
Not if you go to someone who uses their equipment properly! As long as the provider has certified training and a profound understanding of how the brain works, you’ll be able to find relief of whatever condition you’re battling.
Any adverse side effects and we use that word loosely, reported after your treatment are used as feedback to let us know how your brain is responding. This information is used to adjust your next treatment.
Side effects usually include nightmares, insomnia, feelings of anxiety, brain fog, or headaches – nothing dangerous or permanent!
